According to Jesus, abiding in His word (v.38), accepting Him & believing in Him to have eternal life (v.39), and love of God (v.42) are important. The Jews failed to exhibit this. They believed Moses but not Jesus. They searched the scriptures for eternal life but did not believe Jesus for eternal life.

The failures of the Jews: 1. Searched the scriptures but did not follow the core teachings.
2. Did not have the love of God.

“If I testify about myself, my testimony is not true.”You have sent to John and he has testified to the truth.”
‭‭John‬ ‭5:31, 33‬ ‭NIV‬‬
We should testify and in God’s name. We need to glorify God not ourself. If a struggle situation changed, without God’s help that struggle could’ve not changed.

We need to believe in Jesus. Reading the Bible won’t save us.

If you believe in Moses you should believe in Jesus because Moses wrote about Jesus.

“…you chose for a time to enjoy his light” (v 35). For the Jews it was easier to follow rituals (processes). However, they were always blind to spiritual things (believing in Jesus through baptism of heart).

The scriptures can take us away from God if they do not lead us to Jesus

John 5:35 John was a lamp that burned and gave light. Likewise we should be a lamp that gives light.

The Jewish leader knew the scripture as such, but they didn’t walk according to it. They just read it and not believe or exercise the scripture. We too sometime know the verses but fail to act according to them.
Even when Jesus did miracles and signs proving and testifying that He is Gods own son,the Jewish leaders failed to relate it to their reading. We are ignorant sometimes to understand his teachings and fail to follow them in our lives too. We should live a pure and holy life pleasing Him, so Jesus can testify on behalf of us. Similar to how he testified about John.

So we need to have faith and trust in the Lord so we can believe in his words

if you get a compliments from someone for the clothes that you are wearing. If you keep thinking about it and glorifying your dress that’s not good. You should accept it and don’t think about it too much and be prideful. But when you accept the glory God gave you, you should accept it and enjoy the glory that God has given you.

John 5:37: Father testifies Jesus. This makes me to think the importance of trinity, Farher/Son/Holyspirit that each one testifies others without boasting themselves.

Jesus said if we don’t have the love of God then we won’t get eternal life.

1. Willingness
-…do not think I will accuse you before the Father (v45). His intention is to get everyone saved! And, he expects everyone to come to Him to have (eternal) life (v40)
2. Witness
-There is another (John) who testifies in my favor, and I know that his testimony about me is true (v32)
-And the Father who sent me himself has testified concerning me (v37) (in John 1:32-33)
3. Wickedness
-…I know that you do not have the Love of God in your hearts (v42)
-…you accept glory from one another but do not seek the glory that comes from the only God (v44)

The Bible tells us how to have eternal life, but the Jews did not understand it.

We should not glorify others, we should glorify GodWe should believe in Jesus all times.
Believe in our savior Jesus Christ and act according to his word and get eternal life. Love God with all your true heart.

1) Gods word will not dwell in us if we do not believe the one (Jesus) he sent.2) The Jews read the scriptures thinking they can possess eternal life. but they failed to accept Jesus who is also mentioned in the scriptures to get eternal life.
3) The Jews believed Moses but didn’t believe what he wrote (about Jesus)
We need to accept Jesus as our savior to possess eternal life.

44 How can you believe , who receive honor from one another , and do not seek the honor that comes from the only God? – ‘seek honor that comes from God’. We need to wait in patience
– If we seek honor from God, we won’t complain when people do not honor / respect us.

V39 You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that bear witness about me. let’s run to Jesus who can provider this eternal life!!V41 I do not receive glory from people. In the same way let’s try not to seek any appreciation from any human

Life now and this Life that continues into eternity aka Eternal Life. Did you experience this Life? The jews refused to come to Jesus to receive this Life. How can we describe this subjective experience to an unbeliever?
