We need to depend on God in everything because apart from him we cannot do anything (vv. 4, 5). Conversely, anything we do on our own is “useless”.
“Apart from me you can do nothing” (v. 5). We need to stay in constant touch with him so that we will be fruitful and productive.
Jesus says, “Abide in me as I abide in you.” How can we abide? By keeping his commandments.
Even when I bear fruit, God is not silent. Why? Because he prunes me so that I can be more fruitful. Why do I need to be more fruitful? because God has chosen and appointed me to bear fruit that will last for ever.
8 By this My Father is glorified , that you bear much fruit; so you will be My disciples. – this answers the question who are His deciples?
12 This is My commandment , that you love one another as I have loved you. – His expectation from us
1. Be Fruitful
-He prunes every branches that does bear fruit, so that it will be even fruitful (v2).
-If we remain in Him and if He remains in us, we will bear much fruit; apart from Him we can do nothing (v5). If we don’t bear fruit, He cuts us off from Him and throws into the fire. Let’s remain in Him and be fruitful!
2. Be His Friend
-Greater love has no one than this; to lay down one’s life for one’s friends (v13). We are His friends as He has given His life on the cross for our sin. Let’s follow His command and be His Friends, for everything He has taught us.
3. Be Chosen
-Who are we? Are we worthy enough to be His Friends or Disciples? Answer is clearly “No”.
-But, He still chooses us, and appoints us so that we can bear more fruit, fruit that will last (v16). Let’s be one among the chosen, remain in Him, remain in His Love, so we could Love one another!
No fruit: (v2) He cuts off every branch if it bears no fruit.Less fruit: (v2) If it bears less fruit he prunes it, so that it will give more fruit.
Much fruit: (v5) If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit.
(v5) We can bear fruit only if we remain in God.
(v16) I am so grateful that he choose me to be “in his vineyard”
John: 15: 9 If Jesus loves me then why he has to cut me and throw away (v:6) if I don’t bear fruit? HE knows my weakness in bearing fruit right? May be HE does because He loves me and at the same time he loves my neighbor and my friend also who didn’t get or aware of GODs love yet because of me. Oh I get it, It is like this. I found the Loving Jesus through a stranger (the missionaries who came to India) who were loved by God then they started bearing fruit by sacrificing their life and finally laying their life in India (Verse 15:12) for me. Now i get it why a loving God is ready to cut and throw me away if I don’t bear fruit.
